Roshan Hagal (born January 5th) is an original character created by Johnny Ether in 2014.

Background[]

Development[]

Like many of Johnny Ether's other original characters for South Park, the basic design for Roshan Hagal was created on SP Studio and then uploaded to DeviantArt on July 6th, 2014. However, the name of the character was thought up before he became a character, much less a South Park one. A drawing of Roshan would later be uploaded on March 22nd, 2015, with a different hairstyle and shirt logo.

History[]

Roshan was born as Roshan al-Hakim in Lebanon, to a young seventeen-year-old mother he does not remember; his biological father disappeared, seemingly without a trace. Apparently, Roshan was born out of a rape, and was hidden from his mother until her mother, Roshan's grandfather, found out. With his mother murdered in an honor killing, Roshan was forced to run away from home at a very young age and lived in Beirut as a street orphan.

When Roshan was five years old, he tagged along with a bunch of other orphaned children on a migration to Europe. He had ended up in Cologne, Germany, and merely days after his arrival, was brought into custody after being caught stealing food. Upon discovering that the child had no parents, the police placed Roshan in an orphanage, where he learned how to read, write, and speak German. He mastered the language in the span of a few years, learned how to play the violin, and made some friends in the orphanage, but it wasn't until he was seven when he was adopted by a secular Muslim couple: a German professor named Walther Hagal, and his Arabic wife Kharqa, a computer specialist and engineer.

As Walther teaches German and Arabic history, he has taught students at many universities throughout his career, and when Roshan was nine years old, Walther was tenured to a teaching position at the University of Denver in the United States. As such, the Hagals moved from Cologne to South Park, Colorado, where they currently live today.

Appearance[]

Roshan is a slender Arabic male, with medium-length dark brown hair (and bangs hanging over the right side of his face), gray eyes, and tan skin. He usually wears a gray t-shirt over a off-white long-sleeve shirt, blue jeans, and black shoes.

For his superhero alter-ego, Silah Mahkfi ("hidden weapon" in Arabic), he wears all black, with black swimming goggles, a black bandana over his mouth, a black suit with the initials SM painted in dark gray, a black utility belt around his waist, black gloves, and black boots. He is also equipped with a black backpack, which is actually his normal school backpack.

Personality[]

Roshan is a rather reclusive, brooding, and quiet type, and can easily come across as aloof to some people. Although he is very much an introvert, he feels at ease with people he knows, but otherwise, he only says so much, preferring to take everything in and observing his surroundings. When he talks, he is pretty straightforward and honest, and doesn't make much jokes, although he does understand them to a certain extent. Like many of Johnny Ether's OCs, Roshan is also intelligent and book-smart, given that he is trilingual, gets very good grades, and is a skilled artist and violinist.

While his parents are moderate secular Muslims, Roshan is less attached to the religion, despite observing many Islamic traditions and believing in Allah. This may be a result of not being properly acquainted with the religion, and never having attended a mosque in his life, with the exception of a few times. Nevertheless, Roshan is also very aware of terrorism done in the name of Islam, and is very disgusted by it, and is particularly sensitive about being called a terrorist because of his Arabic Muslim background.

Hobbies[]

Roshan's hobbies include drawing, painting, playing the violin, reading, watching the news, and going on the computer. As far as video games go, he only owns a 3DS, but doesn't mind playing other games as well.

In his room, he has an art board on his desk for painting and drawing, and owns a sketchbook and a pencil set. While he does artwork, he listens to classical music, although his musical tastes also include rock music, particularly prog rock and Krautrock, among many other subgenres.

Also in his room is a shelf filled with many books in English, German, and Arabic, sometimes even the same books in different languages. Some of his favorite authors include Franz Kafka, Friedrich Nietzsche, Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Immanuel Kant, Stephen Hawking, Mark Twain, H. G. Wells, and Charles Dickens, among many others.

Unlike other children, Roshan does not have a smartphone, but rather a flip phone and a Zune. Instead of envying people who have an iPhone or an Android phone, he is very content with what he currently has.
